Salmon Fishing NZ – South Island Fishing Trips

Experience unique and scenic braided rivers with expert Canterbury Salmon fishing guide Ben Haywood.

If you enjoy a magnificent backdrop for salmon fishing, Canterbury won’t disappoint. In New Zealand’s South Island you can target wild Chinook (King) Salmon averaging between 5kg (12lb) and 11kg (25lg) in a unique braided river systems at the foot of the Southern Alps. With 4 salmon-producing rivers located less than 90 minutes from Christchurch International Airport, this is a true paradise for salmon fishing – NZ’s one and only destination for salmon fishing trips.

It was great just to be out in the scenic wilds with a chatty like-minded bloke. If no salmon or trout had been caught on the trip, it would still have been a good day out for me, the catch was a bonus! Mark Vidler

As a salmon fishing guide with over 25 years’ experience I can ‘read’ the water. During our guided South Island fishing trips I will locate prime resting holes used by the salmon on their up-stream migration. This gives you the best opportunity to hook into one of these magnificent sport fish. I enjoy finding ‘holding water’ in the more scenic and isolated up-river sections and target the salmon, using light spinning tackle and the fly. The Chinook (King) Salmon that migrate from the Pacific Ocean into Canterbury’s braided rivers are caught from November to the end of April. After capturing a salmon you can choose to release the fish or I can arrange to have it smoked and vacuum-packed by a commercial operator.

Guided salmon fishing day trips cater for beginners through to advanced anglers and family groups. Customised packages and multi-day trips are also available. Top quality fishing equipment, food and transport to/from your accommodation in or near Christchurch is provided.
